I was watching the newly released documentary Mansome last night (definitely rent it on iTunes) and on the subject of the history of men’s grooming products, they showed a few quick clips of old cologne commercials. One stood out in particular, with the narrator’s thick French accent and a scenario straight out of a James Bond opening scene. Check it out, it’s kind of unmissable!

I’m guessing this commercial comes from the 1960s. The cologne, founded in 1932 is actually still in production today (do you know anyone that uses it? Does it smell any good?)
I’m going to safely assume the vintage ad probably succeeded in making most men feel totally inadequate for every one of those twenty seconds spent watching the smoother-than-smooth French-looking dude doing manlier-than-manly things with his girlfriend, who also appears to be his personal spoon-feeder/ barber.
I found a second commercial from the same brand, this time from the 80s which is equally entertaining.

You just can’t buy this kind of advertising genius anymore now can you?
