I spent some time in Joshua Tree, California last summer and it quickly became my favourite place in the golden state, possibly on the planet. But of course, only now that I’m nearly 9,000 kilometres away in Paris, do I discover my desert dream house where I could have spent the night gazing at the stars …
So if I can’t make it just yet, perhaps some of you who live a little closer might be able to go and test it out for me. For $195 per night, this could make a pretty fabulous birthday booking.
Husband and wife team Kathryn and Brian, owners of this remote geodesic dome, are what we call “Superhosts” on AirBnB, which pretty much means they earned a shiny gold medal from the lodging marketplace for consistently providing an all-round awesome experience.
The LA-based couple originally found the house for sale on Craigslist and began spending weekends in the desert renovating the dome themselves and making their own furnishings.
The dome in the desert is a place to be inspired, to disconnect from the hustle of city life and begin planning how you can retire in Joshua Tree.
(Maybe the stars will tell you, which you can handily look at through the dome’s fancy telescope).
There is so much eye candy in the dome, you’ll be itching to find some of your own desert dome accessories for back home. Luckily, having spent time in Joshua Tree myself, I know the vintage and antique shopping on the nearby 29 Palms Highway is exactly the kind of American treasure hunting you would literally cross the desert for. Start off at Route 62 antiques and make your way down the desert highway popping your head into all the quirky stores.
