Today, in totally random photo stories fished out of the internet, we have this rather inexplicable contraption that seems to have been invented for the sole purpose of bobbing buxom babes in bikinis around to the amusement of the passing crowd. It looks like a lawsuit waiting to happen, but hey, it was 1961– who needs safety to spoil the fun?
Photographed by LIFE photographer Francis Miller in Detroit, Michigan, the spectacle appears to be some kind of publicity stunt for the “Aqua Bobber Co.”– the manufacturer of swimmer’s floaties? A google of the company today suggests only that. But what I’m more interested in is who these acrobatic bikini-clad bobbers were. How did they become such expert aqua bobbers?! Where does one learn such a skill? How did they land this job? I hope it paid well…
It seems several ladies took shifts entertaining the crowd, but none seem to have mastered the art of bikini bobbing than this lady…
Look at that form!
