Starling and Rein Irving are on the run. In a good way, mind you, and in extremely stylish fashion. You see, the 20-year-old-ish sisters have been making pilgrimages across the United States, with a collection of vintage treasures in tow. Their vessel? A 1959 green Chevrolet Viking bus they found abandoned in a field. Their operation’s name? Stillwater Vintage.
“Our shop is named after the fictional band that travels by bus in the Cameron Crowe film Almost Famous,” the girls’ explain. These ladies decided that their passion for vintage clothing could be more than a hobby. Now, it’s opened up an entirely new way to for them to see the world, and make a buck, from the backwoods of America to the streets of New York City…
From darted 1950s dresses to the sweetest pair of burnt orange heels, they’ve got quite a few pieces for the perfect summer wardrobe…
From beaded to lamps to paisley print curtains, a poke around the inside does feel like a portal to the 1970s…
Starling is a photographer and aspiring director herself currently living in Brooklyn, New York, and she’s kind of the Kate Hudson free spirit of the two. Her love of vintage began with a pink velvet trench she adored in the 5th grade.
Rein, on the other hand, “is the driver and voice of reason for Stillwater Vintage,” say the girls. She’s a diver, hiker, pianist, and improv artist in comedy and life in general. Together, they’re a pretty groovy team.
Starling has used the bus as a bedroom for the last ten summers. “We spotted it abandoned in a field by the highway and when we inquired the owner about it, he told us he’d sell it to us for $50.00 … It didn’t run when we first bought it but we found a similar bus from 1987 and used its parts (the engine, chassis, etc.) on the frame of the 1959 bus so even though it’s a 50s bus, it is automatic. The entire inside of the bus had to be torn out and redone. It was all done by Will Winkelman of Winkelman Architecture.”
